Omg! The first time I had the Vietnamese claypot, my mind was equal to blown. And it happened in the city of Ho Chi Minh, south of Vietnam, hours away from the Mekong Delta.
As I was working in Ho Chi Minh city for close to five months, I had the chance to explore a variety of food and experiences within city. In terms of food, I tasted flavours from across asia and certainly from Vietnam.
Luckily, my office in the city (Sunwah Tower), was located bang in the middle of the walking street (Nguyen Hue street) of Ho Chi Minh city. From the office windows I could see the lovely fountain, the cafe apartments, the Saigon river, the statue of Ho Chi Minh, et al. Each day, for lunch I would step out from office and explore various eateries around the walking street .
On one such day my colleague, dearest Lan, took me to the famed cafe apartments, located right opposite of my workplace. Once inside the apartments building, we were glancing through the restaurant names and their menu, displayed on the ground floor.
The dish which caught my eye was the prawn claypot. Lan added, that it is a traditional Vietnamese cuisine and a must try for me while in the city. So we decided to try the place.
So this place which has the best prawn claypot in Ho Chi Minh City, is “Time Bistro”.
Located on the second floor of the cafe apartments, Time Bistro, is a cute little place, with lovely paintings on the walls, pretty lights and great ambience.
I ordered what i had planed to, the prawn claypot. After a small wait, the food arrived. Cooked with mushrooms, flavoured onions and served with just the right amount of rice, the dish was perfect for lunch. The lightly cooked curry has a sweet flavour, which Lan told me was the Mekong style of cooking.
In Vietnam, the rice served along with the dish, comes in wooden bowls. And instead of a plate for eating, you receive smaller bowl for yourself. You take the curry from the claypot, the rice from the bigger bowl and mix it in your bowl to eat. They provide you chopsticks for eating, as well as forks and spoons, if you are not comfortable with chopsticks.
It was a very different and a fantastic meal. One best I have experienced in Ho Chi Minh city. I came back extremely satisfied, with the flavour of the prawn claypot on my tongue and feeling of happiness in my mind.
So, do visit the Time Bistro, at the Cafe apartments to enjoy some traditional claypot while in Ho Chi Minh city. Experience the place with your family and friends and leave me a message if you like it.
See you soon with more of such experiences from the city and rest of the world…
